Growing up in the Bay it was impossible to avoid Hyphy music during its heyday during the mid aughts, which coincided perfectly with my formative years in high school. And Mac Dre along with E-40 were indisputably the most influential figures in that scene. I honestly don’t know how much the Hyphy movement translated nationally but it really doesn’t matter in the slightest– it absolutely took over for a time.
If my kids are reading this years down the line I’ll deny every single second of it, but hypothetically a 16-year old at that time may have found himself attending parties with his friends and having a good time imbibing in refreshments that he may not have been able to purchase from a corner store for another five years or so. And at those hypothetical parties he and his fellow socialites would go absolutely bananas whenever “Get Stupid” or “Feelin’ Myself” would come on. The roof would literally come off the place. Put another way, I got stupid and felt myself to the smooth flow of Mac D-R-E a whole helluva lot about twenty years ago. And his music still bangs today.
Standout Songs: “Get Stupid”, “Feelin’ Myself”, “Witme?”
