Americana has been having somewhat of a renaissance in the past decade or so, both in pop culture as well as in popular music, and the late Justin Townes Earle was a beloved figure in that sphere of the world. He possessed an unrelenting honest approach to the craft of songwriting that both celebrated the past and interlaced the challenges of modern day living into his works.
The result? A rousing collection of traditional 12-bar blues progressions that feel fresh and timeless all at the same time. Singer-songwriters hold a special place in my heart for the sole reason that they are historians of the human experience, shedding light on feelings we all have but are oftentimes afraid (or unable) to assess ourselves. A great singer-songwriter tells their story and makes the listener feel as if there is a kinship in the experiences the songwriter is detailing.
And Justin Townes Earle was a great singer-songwriter. It’s a shame he left us so soon.
