A throwback to the early era of funk with massive rhythm sections, Vulfpeck is a concept band that plays with the idea of what a German band would sound like if they did a rendition of American funk music. It’s a vibe.
Vulfpeck first rose to prominence in 2014 with Sleepify, an album with 10 songs roughly 30 seconds long that literally are all silent. The band encouraged to play the album on loop while they slept with the sole purpose of taking advantage of Spotify’s payment algorithm to fund a free concert tour. After clearing $20K in a few months Spotify eventually pulled the album, but not before the whole endeavor got a ton of publicity and put the band on the map.
The Beautiful Game has actual music, and it’s hip as hell. I imagine in the late 2010’s a lot of hipsters in Brooklyn listened to these guys as they rode around on unicyles and sipped french press coffees from humanely sourced organic beans. It’s basically built for college radio, what with the vintage sound and slapping bass lines, and if you’re a fan of tongue-in-cheek fun(k) it’s a worthy listen.
