Turnstile’s 2021 album GLOW ON was somewhat of a defining moment for hardcore music in that it broke down a lot of barriers for the genre commercially. This was an album that made multiple mainstream “Best Of” lists for album of the year (not just rock album, album album), charted at #30 on the Billboard 200, and was met with universal acclaim from music critics.
It’s easy to see why. GLOW ON is a guitar-driven hardcore punk album that accidentally took a left turn on its way home, ended up in the boonies, hung out for a few nights with Parliament and the Cocteau Twins, got hooked on melodic pop, and showed up in a stupor on your doorstep with a list of 15 brand new conspiracy theories that shouldn’t make sense together but you get to listening and goddammit man I think the guy has a point here. From the glitzy synth that kicks off “MYSTERY”, to the fuzzy reverb R&B drip of guitar on “UNDERWATER BOI”, to the Zack de la Rocha vocal stylings on “HOLIDAY”, to the 80’s shoegaze of “ALIEN LOVE CALL”, GLOW ON covers miles of sonic ground that’s custom made for the ADHD generation. And I don’t want my Adderall– let me feel it all.
