Matt Corby’s Rainbow Valley is loaded with atmospheric sheen that’s smoother than a can of peanut butter. Recorded in Corby’s home studio on a five-acre plot in Byron Bay, Australia, Rainbow Valley is a wide-ranging musical journey into the spacey world of Indie R&B. The backing tracks feature an impressively set of instruments all played by Corby himself, and they all come together to layer in a bevy of textures provides an intimate soundscape for him to paint. And paint he sure does– Corby’s vocal range is significant, effortlessly bouncing between a soulful croon, funky falsettos, and dramatic low-end whispers. There’s a real penchant for the dramatic in every note choice Corby makes, but it never feels overly sensational. It’s simply authentic.
Rainbow Valley is a sterling example of what a record written exclusively by a single individual can accomplish. The direction is clear, the narration direct, and the theme is cohesive. And the final product is a damn good journey into the world of Indie R&B.
