Get Back Loretta ‘Over The Wall’ (2006)

Get Back Loretta is a deep cut. I can’t recall the first time I heard this album, who introduced it to me, or even the timespan in which I listened to it. Their Wikipedia and social media pages are quite bare. Best I can tell it looks like they were active in San Diego during the mid 2000’s and were a local hero kinda band. They have 173 monthly Spotify listeners.

But I’m damn happy to be one of those 173 this month. Over The Wall is an eclectic alternative rock record that emulates The Beatles if they grew up in the 90’s and played in a garage for their entire career, eschewing massive production for a more stripped down and intimate feel (Get Back Loretta’s name is actually a reference to The Beatles “Get Back”).

Hip-music-guy credentialing aside, there is a song off this record that is near and dear to me. That song is “Girlface”, and in my early 20’s it served as a soundtrack to a former romantic relationship. And nostalgic appeal aside, it’s a song that stands on its own merits. The delicate guitar line, vocal performance, atmospheric keyboards, and string section all add up to create a gorgeous love song. Deep cuts be damned– it’s a must listen for anyone interested in music.

Standout Songs: “Girlface”, “Gotta Believe”, “Ketamine”
