If this album doesn’t make you want to get up out of your seat, throw your hands in the air, and bust out dancing you’ve lost an appreciation for things that make life worth living. I’m serious. If you don’t smile at least once while listening to the album we can’t be friends.
24K Magic is a love letter to 80’s funk/R&B updated with modern production elements, a record that is crafted with care and perfectionism. There isn’t a single note on this album that feels out of place or forced– it is fun as hell but most importantly handled with meticulous care. The bass lines are absolutely thumping, the guitar lines are delicious, the synths are sent from outer space, and the drum grooves are locked in so goddamn tight your hips can’t help but start swinging (I seriously could listen to just the stems from the percussion section for hours alone).
Bruno Mars is the perfect pop star in my opinion, and 24K Magic is him at the height of his powers. Limitless swagger, infectious energy, a deep appreciation for timeless music, and a voice that is absolutely undeniable. He’s old-school cool and new-age charismatic all wrapped into one.
This is an incredible record filled with incredible hooks. All hail the new King of Pop.
