You can hear The Beatles influence everywhere in The Association’s 1967 album Insight Out, straight away from the barroom sing-along medley of “Wasn’t It Bit Like Now”. Frankly it’s a damn good song, and about as much of a banger you were liable to get in the 60’s.
Being completely unfamiliar with the band ahead of this very first listen I was pleasantly surprised with the performance. I wouldn’t say this is the definitive sound of the 60’s (a distinction uniquely reserved for The Mamas & The Papas) but the album covers the gamut of musical instrumentation, vocal melodies, and lyrical content that permeated the decade of peace and love. It’s an enjoyable time capsule, even if its not an especially memorable one, save for a handful of standouts in “Wasn’t It Bit Like Now” and “Windy.”
On a personal note— “Windy” was actually a marching band staple for my parents during their high school days, which really means nothing other than I know they (as well as my kids) would appreciate me mentioning that fact here if they ever one day read this thing.
