Atlanta Rhythm Section ‘Are You Ready!’ (1979)

Whenever someone says the words “classic rock” the sound I hear in my head is Atlanta Rhythm Section. Their sound is a perfect encapsulation of what makes the genre so evergreen– the smooth lead vocals, layered background harmonies, reliance on major chord progressions, overdriven guitar solos, tasteful piano, and drum fills that feature the toms prominently marching along into the next section.

1979’s Are You Ready! is a live album, collecting all of Atlanta Rhythm Section’s hits up until that point. It’s a great representation of the band’s discography– the rhythm section (pun intended!) is tight as hell, chugging along in the background in perfect synchronization. The groove from drummer Robert Nix during “So Into You” is so thick you can nearly taste it, and bassist Paul Goddard deserves a special shout out here for his absolutely ripping bass solo on “Another Man’s Woman”. Lead singer Ronnie Hammond is pitch perfect throughout the entire set (and has a perfect classic rock frontman name to boot), while lead guitarist Barry Bailey shines throughout with his quintessential licks and solos.

All in all this is an excellent album for any classic rock fans.

Standout Songs: “So Into You”, “I’m Not Gonna Let It Bother Me Tonight”, “Angel (What in the World’s Come over Us)”
